A(lienation)-Effect

emotional or critical detachment of actors and audience from the drama; often achieved through third-person narrator, masks, or other distancing devices. Generally credited to Bertolt Brecht, this performance technique is most commonly found in forms of Epic Theatre (Brechtian) where the audience and performers remain fully aware of their involvement in a theatrical event.
